The Organization for Applied Research Science is new, research-oriented club starting at New York University and looking for active members interesting in participating in interdisciplinary research and other events. The first general meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 25th, in Meyer 102 at 6:20 PM. Students interested in research and specifically, in more holistic fields such as applied mathematics to engineering and other cross-over ideas are encouraged to be a part of this new organization.

Job Opportunity at NYC DEP Thursday, March 19, 2009

The following is a message from John Wilson Jr. of the NYC DEP HazMat: There are job openings for students that have (or about to graduate with) a BS, BA, MS, MA or Ph.D  in our Emergency Response Unit.  We are looking for Chemists, Chemical Engineers, BioChemists and related fields of study (environmental engineering, biology, environmental science/ studies, toxicology, forensic science, physics, biomedical engineering – they must have a minimum of 16 credits in chemistry, and must be a US citizen or have a working green card – student visa’s are not acceptable) .  NYC DEP HazMat is the New York City leader in response to Hazardous Materials incidents.  The NYC DEP HazMat Unit has the responsibility under the New York City CISM document to Identify, Mitigate and Enforce the City Hazardous Materials Laws at Hazardous Materials Incidents within the five Boroughs.   NYC DEP HazMat is a unique group of Scientist, and engineers that help keep our City safe.

Tutor & Mentor Students in the Sciences at the School of the Future Wednesday, February 25, 2009

The Draper Chemical Society is starting a program at the School of the Future with its science departments. Volunteers will visit the School of the Future weekly and mentor students working on their exhibition projects (described below) as well as tutor students who need additional help in the sciences. This is a perfect way to give back to the local community and foster interest in the sciences. Available time periods would be Tuesdays from 11:35AM-12:30PM and afternoons 3:15-4:15PM. As we are already partway into the semester, we ask that anyone interested in volunteering at the School of the Future apply by Monday, March 9th (see below).

Call for Papers for the 57TH ANNUAL UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH SYMPOSIUMSponsored by: The New York Chemistry Students’ Association of the American Chemical Society’s New York Section. The symposium provides an excellent opportunity for undergraduate chemistry students in the NY metropolitan area to present the results of their research. The program includes a keynote address by a Pace University graduate, Dr. Michael Alekshun, of Schering-Plough Corporation, speaking on “Contemporary Issues in Antibiotic Resistance:  Problematic Bugs and the Therapeutic Strategies Used to Treat Them”, presentation of student papers (15 minute talks to small groups), followed by a luncheon.Date: Saturday, May 2, 2009Place: Pace University, Pleasantville,
