The Draper Chemical Society is starting a program at the School of the Future with its science departments. Volunteers will visit the School of the Future weekly and mentor students working on their exhibition projects (described below) as well as tutor students who need additional help in the sciences. This is a perfect way to give back to the local community and foster interest in the sciences. Available time periods would be Tuesdays from 11:35AM-12:30PM and afternoons 3:15-4:15PM. As we are already partway into the semester, we ask that anyone interested in volunteering at the School of the Future apply by Monday, March 9th (see below).School of the Future is a small New York City public school serving students in grades 6 through 12. We have a diverse student population that comes from all five boroughs and from a wide range of socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. We are a full inclusion school which means that students with learning disabilities attend all regular classes and receive extra support from special education teachers who push in to the regular classes. Our classes consist of a heterogeneously skilled population because we believe that students who are at different skill levels make the class a richer and more diverse learning environment. The philosophy of the science department is that we want our students to be scientists rather than learn about science, so we have a very hands-on curriculum. Students are required to take four years of math and science beginning with Integrated science in 9th grade, Biology in 10th, Chemistry in 11th and Physics in 12th. In addition to regular classwork, our students complete exhibitions at the end of each year.Exhibitions are a year-long in-depth research assignment for which students write a thesis paper and orally defend their thesis in a presentation before a panel of students and teachers. We believe that students learn best when they are challenged to approach a problem through the lens of Habits of Mind: establishing their point of view, using evidence to support their thesis, making connections between content, demonstrating the significance of what they study, and considering alternatives to their thesis. For science exhibitions, students typically take a lab they have done in class and go beyond what was studied to create their own experiment that they conduct after school.School of the Future is located at 22nd Street and Lexington Avenue. If you are interested in this opportunity or have any questions, please e-mail our Community Service Chair, Erin, at Erin@drapersociety.org. Interested applicants should indicate which time periods they would be able to volunteer, as well as which science (biology, chemistry, physics)they would like to help in. In addition, please describe any past tutoring experience you may have. The deadline for applicants is Monday, March 9th.

Want to help high school students struggling in chemistry? The Draper Chemical Society has had a long standing relationship with the University Neighborhood High School (UNHS) and is coming back this semester with a focus on lab classes. Volunteers will go down to UNHS in Chinatown and help the chemistry teachers during one of two lab periods. Tutors will assist students with the experiment and post-lab reports. For the lab sections Fridays between 9:49-10:39AM are when tutors would be appreciated.

There is another period for help in the AP Chemistry class that is a longer period. The AP Chemistry class needs help on Thursdays from 12:15-1:40PM.

This is a perfect opportunity to open students to the world of chemistry. If you are interested, please email garrett@drapersociety.org with days and which lab section you could attend. Volunteers can start as soon as possible.

University Neighborhood High School is located just minutes away from the East Broadway stop on the F subway line at:

To any NYU students,

Do you have a passion for a topic in math, computer science, or mathematical sciences? Do you want to share this passion with others? Are you interested in working with a group of enthusiastic math and computer sciences students make this happen?

Then come to an information meeting, this

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 7pm, rm 1314 Warren Weaver Hall
(There will be free pizza!)

At the meeting we will talk about the program that does this, called Courant Splash (cSplash). It is a festival of classes in math and computer science, designed and taught by undergrads, grad students, faculty, and others from NYU with an interest in the quantitative sciences. For an idea of what the program was like, visit the webpage at http://cims.nyu.edu/~csplash/index.php .

The day is a lot of fun and very popular, and this year we’re hoping to make it better than ever. In order to do this, we need your help! There are lots of ways you can help out:

* teach a short class on the day
* help plan the day beforehand
* volunteer on the day
* help set up and maintain the web and computer system

We will talk about all of these at the information meeting. Hope to see you there!

Best wishes,
Miranda (director, cSplash 06, 07, 08)

To everyone interested in making a difference in somebody else’s life, the Draper Society is providing several options. Currently, we have two ventures ongoing, one at NYU and one up at the School of the Future. Whether you are interested in working with younger students, or simply need to fulfill a community service requirement, these options are for you.

Here at NYU, the STEP Program tutors high school students from around New York City who want some added help. Students require help mostly in math, but there may be students interested in science help. These students are motivated, as they had to apply for this program. This is a great opportunity to help students who want to learn and perhaps even open their eyes to the subjects we love so much. The STEP Program meets on Saturdays at NYU and has a morning and afternoon session. The morning session is from 9-1130AM and the afternoon session is from 1230-230PM.

The School of the Future has a requirement for its students to do some sort of research project on a scientific concept relating to daily life. The teachers would like students to be able to write a college level report similar to our lab reports. However, many of these students are not well experienced in performing experiments and documenting their findings. The School of the Future would like college students to act as mentors to these high school students and help steer them in the right direction. The following list contains the topics that students are researching.

Biology/Environmental Science/Life Sciences:
Group 1 (6 students): The effect of various chemicals on the growth of duckweed
Group 2 (3 students): Various physiology experiments (effect of heat
of blood pressure, effect of food particle size on digestion, effect
of aerobic exercise on heart health)
Group 3 (3 students): Effect of various images on pupil size
Group 4 (1 student): Sensory compensation (hearing for vision)
Group 4 (1-2 students): Effect of water temperature and detergent type
on bacteria during handwashing

Physics:
Group 1 (4 students): Projectile Motion (Football, Basketball, Baseball)
Group 2 (2 students): Sound Waves
Group 3 (2 students): Airplanes
Group 4 (2 students): Roller Coasters and Energy Conservation

This is an amazing opportunity to inspire young students to develop an interest in the sciences while working with a topic you enjoy. Students helping at the School of the Future would mentor either during lunch periods or after school during the week.

If you are interested in either program, email Garrett ASAP at garrett@drapersociety.org.
