The candidates are:

President:

Vice-President:

Treasurer:

Secretary:

Without further ado, here are the candidates’ written statements:

President:
Jason Flamendorf/2010/Chemistry
My name is Jason Flamendorf, and for the past two years I have been the Treasurer of the Draper Chemical Society.  This position has afforded me the opportunity to learn all aspects of event planning, and I would like to put my knowledge and experience to excellent use by serving as your President in the upcoming year.  Why should you vote for me for President?  Aside from my past and current devotion to Draper, I am a straight-A student and a Presidential Honors Scholar, both of which demonstrate the reliability I would bring to the position.  I also have big plans for next year, including the return of the Undergraduate Research Conference, increased collaboration with other undergraduate science organizations, and a lecture given by Jorge Cham, creator of the funny online series, PhD comics.  So, don’t let Draper Society be Bohr-ing next year.  Vote for me, Jason Flamendorf, for Draper president!

Asad Baig/2011/?
My name is Asad Baig, and I am currently not a member of the Draper Society. You may ask then, why am I running for President for an organization that up until this point I did not know existed? Well, that’s exactly the reason why I’m running. When I looked at the Draper Society’s website and I saw the goals of the organization, I wondered to myself, why had I not heard about it? This is precisely the current problem with Draper. I feel that not enough outreach is being done and we are not maximizing the potential of this organizaion. If I, as a pre-med student have never heard of Draper, numeorus other students also have no idea of what Draper does or the what goals the organization is trying to accomplish. This organization needs someone with vision; someone who will put Draper on the map, and really get people excited about what Draper does. We need someone to create a buzz around Draper; someone who will have students all over campus talking about the events we hold, or what we do. We need someone fresh, someone who is interested in the society, and someone who will be able to lead us to make changes. I have experience being in leadership of other student organizations which cater to hundreds of students. Vote for me, Asad Baig, and together we can make next year a great success.

Vice-President:
Abhinav Rohatgi/2011/Chemistry
Hello, I am Abhinav Rohatgi and I am running for Vice President. I enjoyed being the secretary of Draper Chemical Society this past year and would like to get more involved in the future of the club. Over the past year, my biochemistry research (on peptoids) and my experience demonstrating molecular gastronomy at the Hall of Science for Chemistry week has convinced me that a hand-on approach is necessary for a holistic understanding of Chemistry.
I have a few goals that I feel are necessary for experiential learning and the future success of Draper. First and foremost, literature reviews are critical for undergraduates to stay connected with the latest advances in chemistry and to open their eyes to the research they could be a part of at NYU. I want to increase our focus on the latest advances of chemistry through more presentations by chemistry faculty. In addition, I will work to set up some meetings where we can go into chemistry labs for quick demonstrations of important or otherwise cool experiments such as the edible mango pearl experiment. I also plan to organize a group discussion that would focus on the future direction of chemistry. Finally, I will work hard to find more opportunities in chemistry fields in NYU and around New York City and make them available to you. I am passionate, hardworking, well organized and, if elected, I will work with the other representatives in bringing a fruitful experience to the Society.

Abdul Iqbal/2011/Biochemistry
First, I would like to apologize for not being able to present this in person before moving along and trying to present myself as a good candidate for Vice President. Currently, I am sophomore studying abroad in London. I am a Biochemistry major who plans to go onto medical school. Alongside my college curriculum, I am currently working on the RNA 3D folding project with Schlick’s Group. I have also served as an instructor for the NYU Science Technology and Engineering Program for high school students. I have taught high school Geometry and an elective course of my own called “Investigating Biocareers.” Over the course of two years, I have learned to figure out ways of enriching my knowledge of the sciences and expanding my horizon with opportunities outside the classroom. I want to share my knowledge and experiences with future students as well as my peers by taking up this leadership role and paving the way for further success in this society. I want to continue the responsibilities of the Vice President and go beyond the means to seek dignitaries to speak at forums and find opportunities for undergraduate students to engage in. Vote, but only vote for me if you feel I will be the candidate who will further this societies horizon and meet your needs. Thank You.

Treasurer:
Meagan Y. Driver/2012/Chemistry
As a chemistry major, I have enjoyed participating in events that the Draper Society has taken part in. I believe that I am well-suited for the position of treasurer. As a member of Hall Council, I am accustomed to keeping track of funds and working under a budget. I am organized and enjoy brainstorming ideas for possible events with others, as I would the doing with the rest of the board and CAS Student Council. I look forward to next year’s events with the Draper Society and would be pleased to fill the position of treasurer.

Anum Ghazipura/2011/Cinema Studies (Minor in Chemistry)

I have had a great passion for chemistry for as long as I can remember. My first science fair experiment was on pH levels of the soil when I was 13. I also have been an avid volunteer on Chemistry Day in October at our science center back home. I want to be the treasurer because I have much experience on handling budgets and accounts due to my old jobs, and I am sure I will be able to handle the job description well. I am trustworthy, extremely honest, and diligent, thus making me the perfect candidate for the e-board.

Aditi Green/2012/Mathematics
Besides a math major, I pride myself in making accurate calculations, and budgeting. As an underprivileged college student, my parents do not fund my activities on campus or tuition. Therefore, I am constantly making the dollar stretch. I search the coupon booklet in the sunday newspaper with a fine tooth comb. As I search for discounts, I make sure to find the most quality brands with the biggest discount. In other words, I look for quality, and small prices. I make a shopping list every time me and my mom go to the supermarket. I make sure to plan out how much we spend, and what we should get because quite frankly I dislike going to any form of store with crowds. Back to the subject, I would make a good treasurer because like tying my sneaker, being a treasurer is second nature to me.

Sameer Shah/2010/ Economics (Pre-medicine)
I feel that I am a qualified candidate for treasurer because I am both pre-med and an econ major.  I have prior club experience, as I am currently on the E-Board of the Medical Economics Society.  I have learned both how to conduct reimbursements and plan events from this club. In addition, I currently work in a genetics lab at NYU Med Center.  At the lab, I work with the nematode C. Elegans, researching a gene involved in gastrulation. I could possibly use my connections at the Med Center for future events and speakers.  I will be a senior next year and have the knowledge and experience necessary to help out younger premeds in the club.  In short, I have both research experience and knowledge of life as a premed at NYU – that is why I hope you will vote for me for treasurer.

Nikolas Block/2012/Psychology (Pre-Med)
As a freshman, I am just getting my footing in the college environment. Still, one thing stands: I am as dedicated as ever to my pursuit in the sciences and I greatly enjoy expanding this knowledge outside of the classroom. As pertaining to the position of Treasurer, my work in The Silver School of Social Work’s Administrative Services department will come in handy as they deal with all outgoing payroll and faculty services. I have worked this entire year in their office and have picked up many skills that will help in the budget proposal as well as all of the proper processes of managing the Society’s finances.
Thank you for this opportunity.

Secretary:
Utsav Kumar/2012/Chemistry

Of all the qualities a person needs in order to be a successful secretary, I believe there are two that standout; those are: organized and prompt.  It is pretty clear that being organized is important since the secretary needs to keep accurate records of the meeting attendance, minutes of E-board meetings, and outgoing emails, sign-up sheets, and budget information.  However, a secretary must also be prompt in performing his tasks; tardiness is not acceptable.  I embody these two characteristics and promise to uphold my responsibilities to the best of my abilities.  But, even more importantly, I assure you that I will be fully committed to being a valuable member of the Draper Society.

Noelle Catarineu/2012/Biochemistry
I would love to be your new secretary!  I am excited to serve the Draper Chemical Society members in all of their chemistry dreams and aspirations.  I am willing to spend time looking into valuable opportunities for our members, such as volunteer positions related to chemistry, internships at research companies, research positions in laboratories, and seminars to attend with distinguished chemistry professors.  I am highly passionate about chemistry and actively seek to advance my knowledge of the subject outside of the classroom.  This past summer I had an internship at the National Institutes of Health and currently I have a research position in a lab in the NYU Chemistry Department.  I am also an experienced secretary.  In the past, I was secretary of my class in my high school’s Student Government Association, and currently I am secretary of another NYU club called Active Minds.

Max Sobrero/2011/Neuroscience
Hello fellow members of the Draper Society!  My name is Max Sobrero, and I am running to be your Secretary for the next academic year.  I am currently studying abroad in London, so I could not make today’s meeting for obvious reasons.  Although I am pursuing a Neuroscience major, I plan to minor in Chemistry, and I feel that I have the necessary skills to be your Secretary next semester.  I have strong communication skills and I am a very organized individual, and this will allow me to keep detailed records of our meeting minutes, emails, and other important documents.  Additionally, I have some great ideas for developing and improving our tutoring programs.  If you want to find out more, all you have to do is vote Max for Secretary.  I hope to see you all next semester!

Good luck!
