Secretary
Abhinav Rohatgi
Secretary
Hello, I am Abhinav Rohatgi and I am running for Secretary. I enjoyed being a part of Draper Chemical Society this past year and would like to get more involved in the future of the club. Over the past year, I have been tutoring Chemistry among other subjects at The Door and have been involved in community service projects. My biochemical research experience has enabled me to understand the hand-on approach necessary for a complete understanding of Chemistry. I have a few goals that I feel are necessary for the future of Draper. I want to increase our focus on the latest advances of chemistry through more presentations by chemistry faculty. In addition, I will work to set up some meetings where we can go into chemistry labs for quick demonstrations of important or otherwise cool experiments. I also plan to organize a group Debate that would focus on the future direction of chemistry. Finally, I will work hard to find more opportunities in chemistry fields in NYU and around New York City and make them available to you. I am passionate, hardworking, well organized and, if elected, I will work with the other representatives in bringing a fruitful experience to the Society.
Jonathan Lai
Secretary
My name is Jonathan Lai and I seek to run for the secretarial position of the NYU Draper society. I seek the nomination because I believe I can provide an insightful experience to the club; having been an active member in Draper for the pass three years, I am fairly well versed in the policies and procedures of the club.
A bit about myself. I am a senior chemistry major currently pursing a BS degree. Having been an active member in the Draper society, I have participated in many events like the ACS National Chemistry Week. Aside from my studies and Draper, I work under Professor Yingkai Zhang in the field of computational chemistry. Outside of chemistry, I enjoy sleeping, eating, and surfing on wikipedia; unfortunately, college doesn’t afford me much time to do that. ![]()
Although Draper has had a long history with promoting chemistry research and work, I, however, believe that we can do more as a club to promote volunteer work and to promote the teaching of the chemistry in general. If elected to be your secretary, I will try to promote more programs to explore other areas of chemistry aside from research.
Treasurer
Erin Armenia
Running for Treasurer
My name is Erin Armenia and I am running for treasurer. I’m an economics major (chemistry minor), so I’m good at working with money! I was also treasurer of my high school’s Model UN club, so I’ve had experience in similar positions. I’m very responsible and always meet necessary deadlines. I am also well organized and enjoy working with others.
Jason Flamendorf
Running for Treasurer
My name is Jason Flamendorf, and for the past year I have served as Treasurer of the Draper Chemical Society. I have truly enjoyed serving on the executive board because it has allowed me to take a more active role in this club that gives chemistry majors, minors, and enthusiasts opportunities to engage in chemistry discussion outside the classroom. For this reason, I would relish the opportunity to be the treasurer of Draper Society for a second consecutive year. Since I was elected my freshman year, I have had two important experiences in chemistry that have only increased my interest in the discipline. First, during the summer between my freshman and sophomore years, I worked in the lab of Professor David Schuster synthesizing fullerene derivatives. This opportunity has given me a greater appreciation for the chemistry that I learn in the classroom, and I strongly support the Draper Society’s efforts to get more undergraduates into the lab by hosting the Undergraduate Research Conference. A second experience that I have had over the past year is working as a General Chemistry Clinic Mentor. I have really enjoyed imparting my knowledge of and passion for chemistry on other students, and I hope to be selected as a recitation TA next year.
Aside from my chemistry experiences, I am a straight-A student and a Presidential Honors Scholar, both of which demonstrate the reliability I would bring to the position of treasurer. In addition, I have been a very active member of Draper Society in the past year. I was a volunteer during ACS Chemistry Week at the New York Hall of Science, and I have been responsible for organizing the General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry review sessions, which are co-sponsored by AMSA. In the spirit of co-sponsorship, I would like to see Draper Society work more closely with clubs from the other scientific disciplines to organize interdisciplinary lectures and events. I am also excited about the return of community service through the C-Step program and the School of the Future. Overall, I have a deep interest in seeing Draper Society succeed, and I believe my past experiences make me a strong candidate for treasurer.
Vice President
Garrett Lew
Running for Vice President
Hey chemistry fans, I’m Garrett Lew, Draper’s current Webmaster. It seems like so long ago, but I first started going to Draper meetings the Fall of 2005, and I was instantly hooked. We’ve had ambitions the last few years, but next year I’d really like to take Draper to the next level. We were formed as a club for everyone interested in chemistry, not just chemistry majors. Next year I intend on making the club much more inviting to those who enjoy chemistry but are not necessarily interested in research, or even upper level chemistry. In Draper, I have held our community service efforts to the highest priority. Even though I was not the community service chair, I spearheaded our efforts to get our community service moving and spoke to teachers in schools that could use our help. Next year, we’ll get things started right at the beginning of the Fall, and Draper will have its best year yet.
President
Rahul Sengupta
President
Hi everyone, I’m Rahul. I am currently the Vice President and I am running for President of the Draper Society. Having been in Draper for the last three years, and being an officer for two of those years (2006-07 as Webmaster), I have extensive experience in planning events for this club, such as the Undergraduate Research Conference. This year one of my more ambitious projects was redesigning the Draper Society website as a blog that can serve as a communications platform for both the club and the Chemistry Department at NYU (www.DraperSociety.org). I am going to run a pilot program with a few professors in the department this summer so we can create a premier chemistry portal on the site and foster connections with academic institutions around the world. Closer to home, I hope to make Draper more accessible to more students. We shall continue to have professors lecture on their research, but I feel that sometimes the material in such presentations are too complex for first year students. I plan to have some meetings that are based less on hard science and more on conceptual (i.e. “How windshield wiper-less windscreens will work”) and historical (i.e. Rutherford’s experiment, etc.) matters that will further understanding of the chemical sciences for both science and non-science majors. A few years ago, we won the President’s Award for Programming (and received a hug from John Sexton). With programming that caters to a broader audience, I believe we can win this award again.
