On March 25 and 26 the Environmental Protection Agency will be on campus at NYU to interview for its Student Career Experience Program (SCEP). SCEP is a special internship designed to provide students currently enrolled in a degree program with paid work experience that compliments their academic program, and to introduce them to Federal government career opportunities. Upon completion of the required number of work hours (generally 640 hours before graduation), and graduation, students become eligible for direct hire into the Federal government for the type of position for which they have trained.

I will be conducting an Information Session about SCEP opportunities on March 25th at the Wasserman Center for Career Development, Presentation Room A at 5 PM. The Information Session is open to all interested students and faculty. Interviews will be held at the Wasserman Center on March 26th. Interested students should apply not later than March 18th by emailing me at miller.roberta@epa.gov or by applying directly through the NYU Career Net website https://nyu-csm.symplicity.com/students/. Please have your students include a resume and a cover letter directed to the position(s) that he/she is interested in. More information is available on the EPA website at: http://www.epa.gov/careers/stuopp.html#oecascep

Requirements for SCEP are:

During the past 5 years that EPA’s Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance (OECA) has sponsored opportunities in this program, over 90 students have participated in this program. Recently several other program offices at EPA Headquarters – the Office of Pollution Prevention, Pesticides, and Toxic Substances, the Office of the Chief Financial Officer, and the Office of Environmental Information – have partnered with OECA to expand the opportunities available to students. All participants have exceeded the academic requirements of the program. We pride ourselves in the ethnic and geographic diversity as well as the high quality of our applicants. We select the institutions where we recruit based on the high quality of potential candidates. To date, over 60% of our participating students have received offers of permanent employment with the Agency upon graduation and an additional 18% received offers from other Federal agencies. We expect this percentage to increase as more and more of the participants graduate and as more parts of EPA adopt this program.

We have had a number of NYU students participate in this program in past years, and have been fortunate to be able to offer several of them permanent employment upon graduation. I have attached job announcements that are applicable to your students as well as a poster announcing our on-campus visit. We are looking for students at all academic levels and in all disciplines. We are especially looking for students in science, including graduate students with toxicology credentials. I would appreciate your publicizing this opportunity EPA is offering through our on-campus visit to your students.

The opportunities are located in EPA Headquarters in Washington, DC or in our environmental forensics lab in Denver, CO. Students selected will be able to begin work this coming summer.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at (202) 564-4116 or at miller.roberta@epa.gov if you have questions. I look forward to working with you to provide opportunities here at EPA for your outstanding students.
