Dear NYC Department of Chemistry Community,
Greetings from the NYC Teaching Fellows program! I am writing to inform you of a very exciting opportunity for your students and to request your assistance in promoting our Fellowship program within your student community. NYC Teaching Fellows is the largest alternative teacher certification program in the country, and we recruit top-quality applicants from various academic backgrounds to become certified teachers in the New York City public school system while earning a subsidized Master’s degree in education. We are currently recruiting top-notch seniors and recent graduates from all over the country to give back, to lead, and to learn, and the sciences are some of the highest need areas in our city’s schools. No teaching experience or education background is required for the Fellowship.
NYC Teaching Fellows is a highly competitive fellowship, and we recruit for excellence; from almost 20,000 applications last year, we were able to offer positions to only 2,000 applicants. This year, we are significantly stepping up our college recruitment efforts, and recruiting high-achieving science majors is a key area of focus. In order to provide the students of New York City with the science training possible, we are looking for students who can demonstrate leadership, critical thinking, and achievement, as well as a deep understanding of the content area. The strongest applicants will also be committed to service and dedicated to social change.
As the semester moves forward and seniors start to seriously contemplate their next steps, we hope that NYC Teaching Fellows will be among their choices. To that end, we want to provide you with the most up-to-date information about the NYC Teaching Fellows program and pass along some important materials. Attached to this e-mail, you will find a fact sheet and our most current job posting to distribute to students. Facing and meeting the challenges of being a Fellow and seeing real change in the achievement of students is a highly rewarding endeavor, and our Fellows report that the their experience in the classroom has changed their lives in ways they never would have imagined.
Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions or would like print information. We would also welcome any advice on the best ways to target your students. We are very excited about working with you this semester to attract top-quality talent from your student community to apply for our program and start teaching in New York City public schools next fall!
Sincerely,
Jessica Wedge
